A textile is a flexible material consisting of a network of natural or artificial fibres often referred to as thread or yarn. Yarn is produced by spinning raw wool fibres, linen, cotton, or other material on a spinning wheel to produce long strands. Textiles are formed by weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting, or pressing fibres together (felt).

The words fabric and cloth are used in textile assembly trades (such as tailoring and dressmaking) as synonyms for textile. However, there are subtle differences in these terms in specialized usage. Textile refers to any material made of interlacing fibres. Fabric refers to any material made through weaving, knitting, spreading, crocheting, or bonding. Cloth refers to a finished piece of fabric that can be used for a purpose such as covering a bed.

What type of suede fabric could I use to make inkjet printer fabric sheets out of?
Q. I would like to make suede inkjet printer fabric sheets, so that I can print images on it for a pillow I want to create.

A. You may not be able to find a suede or faux-suede thin enough to be able to send through the printer. I've had a lot of success with lighter cottons (broadcloth and sateen) by ironing an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of freezer paper (shiny side down) to it then cutting around the edges - it's like a piece of card stock! Sateen is a very soft cotton so you might want to consider using it instead of suede. You might also want to consider just purchasing a package of iron-on inkjet fabric transfer sheets. Just print what you'd like on the sheet and iron it to your project. Super easy.

How can I make fabric stick to a cotton t shirt, or put a design on a t shirt?
Q. I've tried fabric glue spray paint, that didn't work, and it soaked the fabric making it hard and darker than i wanted it to be. I have also tried Iron on glue (*sheets u get at a fabric store u iron to make fabric stick to fabric), that just came off after a while. I cannot sew the fabric on by machine since the design i'm doing is complicated, and i'd rather not do it by hand. Iron ons crinkle so that's out. Fabric spray paint also didn't work for me due to dripping on the dark t shirt...and it didn't color it since the fabric is too dark. Screen printing is so expensive...rawr it seems hopeless to me! Does anybody have a different method? Or is there a specific kind of fabric glue that works for you? *sigh Any suggestions… [cont.]

A. Steam a Seam 2 Lite is an iron on product but it is NOT like Wonder Under. It does not need anything to keep the edges down. (I.e. fabric paint.) It is a permanent iron on adhesive all the way to the edges. I have used it for years. It washes and dries and does not come off. It is transparent so it will not show when you are done. I would suggest using Steam a Seam 2 Lite as opposed to Steam a Seam 1 Lite because it doesn't have adhesive on both sides. Also, use Lite because it is not as thick as regular (original) Steam a Seam. It doesn't shrink or crinkle. It is lightweight so it doesn't add a lot of thickness to fabric. Here is the company website: I am a sewing educator/lecturer and try to keep my eyes and ears… [cont.]

How can I tell if a fabric has 50 percent stretch?
Q. I have a pattern that calls for a fabric with 50 percent stretch. How do I choose a fabric like this at the store? Thanks!

A. This is easier to show than to write about! Fold the fabric sideways, in the selvage to selvage direction. Measure a six inch piece of this fold and take hold of it at each end of the six inch span. See if you can easily stretch that six inches so that it measures nine inches. That would be 50 percent stretch. Sometimes pattern envelopes have a little measuring tool right on the back for you to use in the store. If the fabric doesn't stretch this far easily, do not use it for that pattern, as it won't fit correctly.
